Underwater Blanking in Laem Chabang for Scrubber Discharge Valve Replacement

Underwater blanking is a critical commercial diving service used when vessel operators need to isolate sea openings, discharge outlets, or underwater connections before repair, replacement, or maintenance work can proceed safely from inside the vessel.

MaxiDive recently completed an underwater blanking operation in Laem Chabang, Thailand, supporting the replacement of multiple scrubber discharge valves. The work required accurate underwater positioning, diver coordination with the vessel’s engineering team, and careful installation and removal of temporary blanking arrangements.

Why Underwater Blanking Was Required

For vessels fitted with scrubber systems, discharge points are connected directly to the sea. When internal valves or related components require replacement, the external openings must be controlled to prevent uncontrolled water ingress and allow the engineering team to work safely.

In this project, MaxiDive’s commercial diving team was assigned to locate and temporarily blank multiple scrubber discharge points on the starboard side. The operation supported onboard maintenance work and helped the vessel complete the required technical task without unnecessary delay.

Scope of Underwater Work

The underwater scope included:

  • Coordination with the vessel’s chief engineer and dive supervisor

  • Location of five scrubber discharge points on the starboard side

  • Installation of underwater blanking at the required positions

  • Confirmation with the vessel’s engineering team

  • Removal of the blanking after completion of internal work

  • Underwater photo and video documentation

The work was performed by trained commercial divers using appropriate underwater tools and inspection equipment.

Underwater Blanking Laem Chabang: Operational Control and Safety

Underwater blanking requires more than simply placing a cover over an opening. Each position must be correctly identified, checked, secured, and later removed without damaging the hull, discharge area, or surrounding structure.

For underwater blanking in Laem Chabang, MaxiDive follows a controlled work sequence:

  1. Review the vessel’s requirements and underwater layout

  2. Confirm the exact work scope with the vessel’s responsible officers

  3. Locate the required discharge or sea connection externally

  4. Install the temporary blanking arrangement

  5. Provide confirmation to the vessel team

  6. Maintain communication during internal repair work

  7. Remove the blanking after the repair is completed

  8. Deliver photo and video evidence for documentation

This process helps vessel operators reduce risk during maintenance operations and supports safe coordination between divers and the onboard engineering team.

Supporting Scrubber Discharge Valve Replacement

Scrubber discharge systems are part of the vessel’s environmental compliance equipment. When discharge valves require replacement, the work must be completed with attention to safety, sealing, access, and documentation.

MaxiDive’s role in this type of project is to provide underwater access and external isolation support so that the ship’s crew or repair team can perform internal valve replacement under controlled conditions.

This service is especially useful when a vessel is alongside, at anchorage, or operating under a tight maintenance schedule.

Documentation and Technical Reporting

Clear documentation is an essential part of MaxiDive’s underwater blanking service. For this operation, underwater photos and video evidence were used to document the condition and work positions before, during, and after the blanking process.

This allows the vessel’s technical team, superintendent, owner, or manager to verify that the required underwater support was completed properly.
