Underwater Inspection and Partial Cleaning for CALM Buoy Assemblies in Sattahip

MaxiDive completed an underwater inspection and partial cleaning operation for CALM buoy assemblies at Mahidol Port, Sattahip, Thailand. The scope was focused on supporting underwater visibility, technical access and documentation for selected structural and coating assessment areas.
Unlike full hull cleaning or propeller polishing projects, this operation required targeted cleaning only. The objective was to remove marine growth from specific inspection zones so that the diving team could assess coating condition, weld seams, steel condition and structural components below the waterline.

Underwater Inspection and Partial Cleaning for Technical Access
The underwater inspection and partial cleaning was carried out using surface-supplied diving equipment, an HD inspection system, hand tools and support equipment. The buoy structure was affected by both soft and hard marine growth, which limited direct access to several underwater areas.
Selected sections were cleaned to allow better inspection access, including the buoy body, chain stopper areas, skirt structure, towing lugs and bottom sections. This approach helped the inspection team review relevant areas without presenting the operation as a full cleaning service.
For CALM buoy assemblies and offshore mooring-related structures, partial cleaning is often an important part of underwater inspection work. Marine fouling can hide coating wear, corrosion, weld seams, contact marks and deformation. By cleaning selected areas only, the diving team can document the condition of key components while keeping the scope controlled and focused.

Marine Fouling Condition
The underwater areas showed heavy marine fouling, with a combination of soft and hard growth. This fouling affected visibility and limited the ability to inspect coating and steel condition directly.
The cleaning was concentrated on the areas required for inspection. After removal of growth from selected points, the team was able to check the exposed surface condition and document findings with underwater video and photographic evidence.
The inspection confirmed that marine growth was present across below-waterline sections, but selected cleaning provided sufficient access to review the required technical items.

Coating, Steel and Weld Seam Assessment
After partial cleaning, the exposed areas allowed inspection of coating and steel condition. The overall weld seam condition was found intact in the inspected areas. The topcoat condition was generally fair to the black paint layer.
Minor bare steel and surface corrosion were observed in some areas. No signs of pitting or cracking were noted during the inspection of the cleaned zones.
This type of documentation is important for marine operators because it helps support maintenance planning, repair decisions and technical follow-up without waiting for drydock access.

Structural Area Inspection
The inspection included selected structural areas such as skirt sections, towing lugs, chain stopper areas and lower buoy sections. The skirt structure showed signs of contact damage, with a bent profile observed. No other major abnormalities were reported in the inspected areas.
For buoy assemblies, underwater condition monitoring is important because these assets remain exposed to marine growth, movement, contact risks and operational loads. Regular underwater inspection helps operators identify changes in condition and plan further maintenance when required.
