MaxiDive completed a Buy-and-Sell Underwater Inspection for a commercial vessel at Map Ta Phut Anchorage, Thailand. The inspection was carried out to support technical review during a vessel transaction process, providing underwater documentation of hull plating, appendages, propeller assemblies, ICCP areas and rudder components.

The operation was completed under moderate sea state conditions with approximately 4 meters of underwater visibility. MaxiDive’s commercial diving team used SSDE, HD 4K inspection system and measurement tools to document the vessel’s underwater condition while the vessel remained afloat.

Buy-and-Sell Underwater Inspection: Service Scope

The requested underwater work was focused on inspection for buy-and-sell purpose. This type of survey helps involved parties review the vessel’s underwater condition before final technical, commercial or maintenance decisions.

The inspection scope included:

  • hull plating inspection;

  • underwater documentation of marine growth;

  • coating condition review;

  • bow area and bulbous bow inspection;

  • appendage inspection;

  • sea chest grating checks;

  • discharge and drain plug inspection;

  • bilge keel condition review;

  • ICCP area inspection;

  • propeller blade, hub and boss inspection;

  • stern tube inspection;

  • rudder assembly inspection;

  • underwater photo/video documentation.

For vessel owners, buyers, sellers and technical representatives, underwater inspection provides practical evidence of vessel condition without immediate dry docking.

Hull Plating Condition

The hull plating was reported as heavily covered by soft marine growth. The soft marine growth consisted of slime and algae, with scattered hard marine growth including barnacles and oyster-shell type fouling.

Loss of top coat consistent with abrasion from the vessel’s anchor chain was noted in the bow area. Bare steel was identified on the bulbous bow area. Where visible, the paint condition throughout the vessel was reported in fair condition.

The flat bottom area was reported free from evidence of grounding and major contact damage. No structural damage or significant underwater anomalies were noted in the inspected hull areas.

Appendage and Sea Chest Inspection

The underwater inspection also covered appendages and sea chest gratings. The transducers were reported securely in place. The port sea chest grating was secure in place, while one missing bolt was noted on the starboard sea chest grating.

The discharges were free from abnormalities. All drain plugs were secure in place, with no leakage noted.

The bilge keels were reported in normal profile, with no contact damage. Minor surface corrosion was noted on leading and trailing edge areas.

ICCP Area Findings

The ICCP forward section was reported in poor condition, with surface corrosion found in the surrounding area. However, no contact damage or cracks were reported.

The ICCP aft section was reported in normal profile, with no abnormalities noted. These findings provide useful technical information for future maintenance planning and underwater condition review.

Propeller Assemblies and Stern Tube

The propeller blades, hub and boss were found heavily covered by soft marine growth. Propeller surface roughness was measured as grade “C” on Rubert’s Scale.

The cementing material was reported as remaining, with no visible bolts noted. The stern tube was found secure and free from structural anomalies.

Propeller condition is an important part of buy-and-sell underwater inspection because marine growth and surface roughness can affect propulsion efficiency and future maintenance requirements.

Rudder Assembly Inspection

The rudder was heavily covered by soft marine growth. The paint coat appeared in good condition, with areas of missing paint down to bare steel on the leading edge. Minor pitting was noted on the leading edge.

The rudder hatch was reported secure in place. Deep plug areas were secure, and the drain plug was secure with no leakage noted.

The upper plate could not be inspected due to being above the waterline. This limitation was documented as part of the inspection record.

Why Buy-and-Sell Underwater Inspection Matters

Buy-and-sell underwater inspection provides important technical visibility during vessel transaction processes. It helps buyers, sellers, ship managers and technical teams review the underwater condition of the vessel before making commercial or operational decisions.

This type of inspection can help identify:

  • marine growth condition;

  • coating wear and bare steel areas;

  • possible contact damage;

  • propeller surface condition;

  • rudder and appendage condition;

  • sea chest and discharge condition;

  • ICCP condition;

  • anode and underwater component status;

  • areas requiring future cleaning, repair or monitoring.

By documenting the vessel’s underwater condition while afloat, the inspection supports transparent technical review without immediate dry docking.
