An inspection should consider the anodes, reference electrodes, dielectric shields and surrounding hull coating together. Recording these areas provides a clearer basis for technical review than photographing an isolated component without its surrounding context.


The scope must also be clear: an underwater visual inspection records accessible external condition. Confirmation of electrical performance requires appropriate system readings, testing and interpretation.

Understanding the Role of ICCP


Impressed current cathodic protection uses an external DC power supply and hull-mounted anodes to help control corrosion of submerged metal surfaces. Reference electrodes provide hull-potential feedback to the control system.


ICCP operates alongside the vessel’s protective coating system. Its anodes should not be assessed using the same percentage-depletion approach applied to sacrificial anodes. Their construction and operating principle are different.


For an inspection plan, the practical starting point is to identify the installed equipment from the vessel’s drawings and manufacturer documentation. Similar-looking hull fittings should not be labelled as ICCP components solely from appearance.

A useful inspection record follows the same structure at each accessible component:


  • Confirm its location against the supplied arrangement drawing.

  • Record an overview showing the component and surrounding hull.

  • Capture closer views of accessible surfaces and edges.

  • Describe visible damage, obstruction or coating irregularities.

  • State any limitations caused by visibility, marine growth or restricted access.


This approach makes photographs easier to interpret and helps the technical team compare observations between inspection periods.

ICCP Anodes: Surface and Housing Condition


For each identified ICCP anode, the proposed visual checklist should cover:


  • Visible cracking, breakage, deformation or impact marks.

  • Condition of the accessible housing and perimeter.

  • Apparent displacement or gaps requiring closer technical review.

  • Marine growth, deposits or debris obscuring the assembly.

  • Surface irregularities that can be documented clearly.


Use an overview image to establish location, followed by close-up photographs of any relevant feature. Describe what is visible without assuming the condition of concealed connections or internal seals.


A visually intact anode should not automatically be reported as electrically operational. Manufacturer guidance treats visual assessment, connection checks and output evaluation as separate parts of system assessment.

Reference Electrodes: Identification and External Condition


Reference electrodes are sensing components used for hull-potential monitoring. Designs and sensing materials vary; the installed type should be confirmed from the equipment documentation.


The external inspection record should address:


  • Whether the identified electrode is visible and accessible.

  • Apparent damage to its exposed face or housing.

  • Marine growth or deposits covering the exposed area.

  • Visible abnormalities around the component perimeter.

  • Condition of the adjacent hull coating.


Photographs cannot establish electrode accuracy. If the vessel reports inconsistent readings, the visual findings should be passed to the responsible technical personnel for comparison with system data and any required verification.


Dielectric Shields: Inspect the Area Around the Anodes


The dielectric shield is an insulating area associated with the ICCP anode installation. It helps control current distribution and protect the hull close to the anode. Its extent and construction depend on the system design.


The proposed inspection checklist should include visible cracks, missing material, lifted edges, blistering and exposed areas within the identified shield zone.


An overview should show the relationship between the anode, shield and surrounding coating. Close-up photographs should then document any irregularity. Avoid describing an ordinary coating boundary as shield damage unless the intended shield arrangement is known.


Surrounding Hull Condition: Record the Context


Hull coatings and cathodic protection work together. Coating deterioration can expose additional metal to seawater, making surrounding hull condition relevant to the assessment.


Useful observations include visible coating loss, blistering, abrasion, exposed metal, rust-coloured staining and local surface irregularities. Record their position relative to the component rather than using a general statement such as “hull condition checked.”


An unusual appearance is an observation, not a confirmed cause. Photographs alone should not be used to diagnose underprotection, overprotection or an electrical fault. Where relevant, further assessment may require suitable measurements or specialist review.


Inspection Planning and Vessel Coordination


Before mobilization, the inspection scope should identify the components to be examined, the available arrangement drawings, access constraints and the documentation expected by the vessel’s technical team.


The diving supervisor and vessel team must agree the applicable equipment-isolation arrangements and controls against unintended activation. These should address the ICCP installation and other relevant underwater hazards through the vessel-specific diving plan. Any subsequent electrical testing must be coordinated separately from diver access under the applicable procedures.


Technical Documentation That Supports Decisions


A useful report should allow a superintendent to understand what was inspected, what was visible and which findings require follow-up.


For each component, the proposed record should include:


  • Component identification and location.

  • Overview and close-up photographs.

  • Concise descriptions of visible condition.

  • Relevant surrounding coating observations.

  • Visibility and access limitations.

  • Items requiring further technical evaluation.


Wording should match the evidence. “No visible external damage observed on the accessible surface” is more precise than “ICCP system in good working order” when only a visual inspection has been completed.


Keep observed condition separate from recommendations. This makes the report more useful for maintenance planning and avoids presenting an unverified diagnosis as a confirmed finding.


When to Consider an Underwater ICCP Inspection


An external condition inspection may be considered during planned underwater surveys, following suspected contact damage, or when the vessel’s technical team needs visual evidence to support investigation of an ICCP concern.


The scope and timing should follow the installed system’s documentation, the vessel’s maintenance plan and applicable survey requirements. There is no single inspection interval suitable for every installation.
