The initial image sequence should show the outlet in relation to the surrounding hull. This helps the receiving technical team confirm the location before reviewing close-ups.

The coating assessment should extend beyond the immediate edge of the opening to an agreed surrounding area.


Useful observations include peeling, flaking, blister-like features, exposed substrate, visible corrosion and changes in surface appearance. Marine growth should be documented where it conceals the coating or makes comparison difficult.


The location and pattern of deterioration matter. Images should show whether an observation is concentrated at the outlet edge, appears below or beside it, or continues into the wider hull area.


A practical sequence combines an overview, intermediate views and close-ups. Consistent orientation allows the technical team to relate the detailed images to the overall condition.


Where dimensions are required, the method and access should be agreed in advance. Apparent size in a photograph is not a reliable measurement unless a suitable scale and viewing geometry are available.


The report should also avoid treating staining as confirmed steel wastage. Surface appearance, coating condition and remaining metal thickness are separate findings.

Marine Growth and Restricted Visibility


Growth, deposits, low visibility and the geometry of the opening can limit an external inspection.


An obscured surface should be recorded as obscured. It should not be described as sound simply because no defect was visible through the obstruction.

External inspection findings are most useful when reviewed alongside the vessel’s drawings, operating history and previous examination records.
