Full Hull Cleaning and Propeller Polishing at Koh Si Chang Anchorage

MaxiDive completed Full Hull Cleaning and Propeller Polishing for a commercial vessel at Koh Si Chang Anchorage, Thailand. The project included underwater hull cleaning, appendage inspection, discharge outlet cleaning, propeller polishing and technical photo/video documentation while the vessel remained afloat.


The work was carried out by MaxiDive’s commercial diving team using underwater camera equipment, GoPro documentation, hydrophilic tools, hand tools and other professional cleaning equipment. The operation supported vessel underwater maintenance, hull condition review and ship husbandry planning without dry docking.

Full Hull Cleaning and Propeller Polishing Scope


The scope combined underwater hull cleaning with propeller polishing and general underwater condition documentation. MaxiDive’s diving team worked on hull plating, appendages, discharge outlets, sea chest grating areas, bilge keels, thruster area, rudder assembly and propeller assembly.


The operation included:


  • Underwater hull cleaning

  • Soft and hard marine growth removal

  • Discharge outlet cleaning

  • Sea chest and appendage area inspection

  • Propeller polishing

  • Rubert Scale propeller surface documentation

  • Underwater photo and video reporting

Hull Cleaning and Marine Growth Removal


During the hull cleaning operation, soft marine growth was reduced from the underwater hull areas. In some vertical side areas above the waterline, full removal of soft marine growth was limited; however, divers were able to remove hard marine growth and reduce the thickness of soft marine growth in accessible areas.


The underwater inspection also documented hull condition. The vertical side was found free from evidence of contact damage or abnormality. The flat bottom was documented free from signs of grounding or abnormality, and the stern arrangement was found in good condition.


Abrasion consistent with anchor chain contact was noted at the bulbous bow area. This finding was documented as part of the technical underwater report for the vessel’s management team.

Appendage and Discharge Outlet Cleaning


Appendage areas were checked as part of the underwater cleaning and inspection scope. Transducers were found secure, sea chest gratings were secure in place, visible drain plugs were secure and keepers were intact.


The diving team also reached and cleaned accessible discharge outlets. Hull anodes were documented as secure and active, bilge keels were found in normal profile, and the thruster area was free from damage or abnormality.


This type of appendage and niche-area documentation is important because marine growth often accumulates around fittings, outlets and recessed areas, not only on flat hull surfaces.

Propeller Polishing to Rubert Scale A


The propeller polishing scope was completed to improve blade surface condition and reduce surface roughness. Upon completion, the propeller surface roughness was polished to Rubert Scale grade A.


Propeller blade condition was also documented during the operation. Signs of cavitation, contact marks and other blade surface findings were recorded for technical review. The boss cap was found secure, with the keeper intact.


Regular underwater propeller polishing is an important part of ship husbandry because smoother propeller surfaces help reduce unnecessary resistance caused by marine growth and surface roughness.

Rudder Assembly Documentation


The rudder assembly was inspected and documented during the operation. The overall weld seam was found intact, rudder anodes were secure and active, and no contact damage or abnormality was noted.


This documentation provides useful underwater condition information for vessel managers and technical superintendents when planning future maintenance.
