MaxiDive completed a Buy-and-Sell Underwater Inspection for a commercial vessel at Map Ta Phut Anchorage, Thailand. The inspection was carried out to support technical condition review during a vessel transaction process while the vessel remained afloat.
The underwater work was completed under calm sea state conditions with approximately 5–8 meters of underwater visibility. MaxiDive’s commercial diving team used SSDE and HD 4K underwater documentation system to inspect and record the condition of hull plating, appendages, sea chest gratings, ICCP areas, propeller assemblies, stern tube and rudder components.

Buy-and-Sell Underwater Inspection: Service Scope
The requested underwater work focused on vessel condition documentation for buy-and-sell purpose. This type of inspection helps buyers, sellers, owners and technical representatives review the vessel’s underwater condition before making commercial, operational or maintenance decisions.
The main inspection scope included:
hull plating inspection;
marine growth documentation;
bow area and bulbous bow condition review;
flat bottom inspection;
weld seam condition observation;
appendage inspection;
sea chest grating checks;
discharge and drain plug inspection;
bilge keel condition review;
ICCP area inspection;
propeller blade, hub and boss inspection;
stern tube condition review;
rudder assembly inspection;
underwater photo/video documentation.

Hull Plating Condition
The hull plating was reported with light coverage by soft and hard marine growth. The soft marine growth was consistent with a light layer of slime and algae, while scattered hard marine growth was consistent with barnacles and baby barnacles.
Loss of top coat consistent with abrasion from the vessel’s anchor chain was noted in the bow area. Bare steel was identified on the bulbous bow. Where visible, the paint throughout the vessel was reported in excellent condition.
The flat bottom was reported free from grounding and abnormalities. The overall topcoat and weld seams were intact. No concave weld seams were noted, and no damage or structural anomalies were reported.

Appendage and Sea Chest Inspection
The underwater inspection also covered appendages and related components. The transducers were reported securely in place.
All sea chest gratings were secure and fastened in place, with no abnormalities reported. The discharges were free from abnormalities, and all drain plugs were secure in place with no leakage noted.
The bilge keels on both sides were reported in good condition, with no abnormalities. Marine fouling was found on the ICCP surface and documented for technical review. The sacrificial anode was secure and active, with approximately 5% depletion.
Propeller Assembly Condition
The propeller blades, hub and boss were found covered by soft and hard marine growth. Propeller surface roughness was measured as grade “E” according to Rubert Scale.
The propeller blades showed no evidence of cavitation, cracks, dents or visible abnormalities. The stern tube was reported free from structural anomalies.
Propeller condition documentation is an important part of buy-and-sell underwater inspection because surface roughness, marine growth and visible blade condition can affect future maintenance planning and vessel performance review.
Rudder Assembly Inspection
The rudder was lightly covered by soft and hard marine growth. The paint coat appeared in good condition, with areas of missing paint down to bare steel on the leading edge.
The niche area showed light coverage by hard marine growth. The drain plug was secure in place, and the rudder hatch was secure with all bolts in place. The sacrificial anode was secure and active, with approximately 5% depletion.
The upper plate could not be inspected because it was above the waterline. This limitation was documented as part of the inspection record.
Why Buy-and-Sell Underwater Inspection Matters
Buy-and-sell underwater inspection gives buyers, sellers and technical teams practical underwater visibility before vessel transaction decisions are made. It helps document the actual condition of hull plating, propeller assemblies, rudder components, appendages and underwater fittings while the vessel remains afloat.
This type of inspection supports:
vessel condition verification;
transaction-related technical review;
maintenance planning;
identification of coating loss or bare steel areas;
propeller roughness documentation;
review of appendages and sea chest gratings;
rudder and stern tube condition assessment;
underwater photo/video records for technical teams.
For shipowners, ship managers and technical superintendents, documented underwater inspection reduces uncertainty and supports better decision-making before purchase, sale or future maintenance planning.
